Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane is set to complete a free transfer to Turkish champions Galatasaray after arriving in Istanbul on Thursday to finalise the move.

Galatasaray confirmed they have “started transfer talks” with the 29-year-old Germany international, posting photos on social media of Sane wearing a club scarf upon his arrival at Ataturk Airport. The winger’s contract at the Allianz Arena is due to expire at the end of June.

The move has generated considerable excitement among the Turkish club’s fanbase, with over one million supporters reportedly tuning into a live flight-tracker on Galatasaray’s YouTube channel on Tuesday to follow Sane’s plane to the city.

The Bundesliga champions had been keen to retain Sane and included him in their 29-man squad for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup. However, the player rejected their offer of a contract extension, paving the way for his departure as a free agent. According to a report by The Athletic, Sane has verbally agreed to a three-year deal with Galatasaray.

Sane joined Bayern Munich from Manchester City in 2020 on a five-year contract. During his time in Bavaria, he won the Bundesliga title in four of his five seasons. He scored 61 goals in 220 appearances for the German club, including 13 goals in 45 matches during the recently concluded 2024-25 campaign. Prior to his time at Bayern, Sane won six major trophies in four years with Manchester City.

Sane’s impending arrival is a significant statement of intent from Galatasaray as they look to build on their domestic success and strengthen their squad for European competition.
