Liverpool Beat Nine-Man Tottenham 2–1 in Chaotic Premier League Clash
Liverpool secured a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, capitalizing on two red cards to the hosts in a dramatic Premier League encounter played under light rain in front of 61,138 spectators.
The match turned decisively in the first half when Xavi Simons was shown a straight red card in the 33rd minute following a VAR review for a studs-up challenge on Virgil van Dijk. Reduced to ten men, Spurs defended resolutely until halftime but were increasingly stretched after the break.
Liverpool made their numerical advantage count in the 56th minute, when Alexander Isak finished calmly from close range after a precise assist from Florian Wirtz. Isak was injured in the scoring action and forced to leave the field soon after. The visitors doubled their lead ten minutes later as Hugo Ekitike headed home Jeremie Frimpong’s cross to make it 2–0.
Tottenham refused to capitulate and pulled a goal back in the 82nd minute through Richarlison, who bundled the ball in from a goalmouth scramble to reignite home hopes. However, any chance of a comeback was extinguished deep into stoppage time when captain Cristian Romero received his second yellow card in the 93rd minute for kicking Ibrahima Konaté, leaving Spurs with nine men.
Despite nine minutes of added time, Liverpool held firm to see out the win. Spurs had earlier struck the woodwork through Randal Kolo Muani, but failed to find an equalizer.
The match saw several bookings, with Romero, Micky van de Ven, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Richarlison cautioned for Tottenham, while Konaté, Alexis Mac Allister, and Dominik Szoboszlai were booked for Liverpool. John Brooks officiated the encounter.
The result lifted Liverpool to fifth place, extending their unbeaten league run to five matches, while Tottenham slipped to 13th, having now lost 11 home league games in 2025, a club record. Isak’s strike marked his seventh Premier League goal against Spurs, while Ekitike’s header took him to 11 non-penalty goals this season, second only to Erling Haaland.
After the match, Tottenham manager Thomas Frank praised his side’s mentality despite the setbacks but questioned the first red card. Liverpool head coach Arne Slot described the victory at a difficult venue as a significant step in his side’s push up the table.
