Mbappé Scores Twice as Real Madrid Beat Oviedo 3-0
Kylian Mbappé scored his first two goals of the La Liga season as Real Madrid defeated newly promoted Real Oviedo 3-0 at the Estadio Carlos Tartiere on Sunday. The victory keeps manager Xabi Alonso’s side perfect with two wins from two matches, putting them level on six points with rivals Barcelona and Villarreal at the top of the table.
Mbappé, who scored the winner in the season opener against Osasuna, opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a low, driven shot from the edge of the box. His second goal came in the 83rd minute, a cool finish after an assist from substitute Vinícius Júnior. Vinícius then completed the scoring in stoppage time with a clinical strike of his own.
The match saw some notable tactical decisions from Xabi Alonso, who opted to start Dani Carvajal at right-back, leaving new signing Trent Alexander-Arnold on the bench. Alexander-Arnold, who started the previous match, came on for the final three minutes. Teenage Argentine sensation Franco Mastantuono, 18, was handed his first start and impressed with his performance on the right wing before being replaced in the second half.
Oviedo, playing in Spain’s top flight for the first time in nearly 25 years, showed resilience and nearly found an equalizer in the 81st minute when a long-range effort from Kwasi Sibo struck the outside of the post with the score still 1-0. However, Mbappé’s second goal just two minutes later sealed the win for the visitors.
