Messi Scores Again as Miami Held to 1-1 Draw
Lionel Messi scored his third goal in four Major League Soccer appearances this season, but Inter Miami were held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Toronto FC at Chase Stadium on Sunday night, April 6th. Messi’s equalizer came just minutes after Toronto had taken a rare lead.
Federico Bernardeschi opened the scoring for Toronto FC two minutes into first-half stoppage time, only the second time the Canadian side has led a match this season. However, their advantage was short-lived.
Five minutes into stoppage time, Messi leveled the scores with a well-taken left-footed volley from the top of the 18-yard box. The goal, Messi’s 40th in all competitions for Inter Miami, extended his franchise record. He had earlier seen another apparent goal disallowed due to a foul committed in the build-up.
The draw leaves Inter Miami (4-0-2) unbeaten in MLS this season and in second place in the Eastern Conference, one point behind leaders Columbus Crew with a game in hand. Toronto FC (0-4-3) remain winless.
Messi, and miami who recently returned to the starting lineup after being rested for three games due to load management, has now registered a goal or assist in all four MLS matches he has participated in this season. Inter Miami are 8-1-2 overall across all competitions, including their run in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Inter Miami’s focus now shifts to the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter-final against LAFC on Wednesday in Fort Lauderdale, having lost the first leg 1-0. Toronto FC host Minnesota United next Saturday, while Inter Miami resume MLS play against the Chicago Fire next Sunday.
