Mourinho in Hot Water After Another Derby Incident
Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho could face disciplinary action after grabbing the nose of Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk following his team’s 2-1 home defeat in the Turkish Cup quarter-final.
The incident occurred after Wednesday’s fiery Istanbul derby, which saw Victor Osimhen score twice for Galatasaray before Sebastian Szymanski pulled one back for Fenerbahce. The match descended into chaos in the closing stages when a mass brawl broke out between both sets of players, resulting in three red cards – two for Galatasaray players.
After the final whistle, Mourinho appeared to pinch Buruk’s nose, with the Galatasaray manager falling dramatically to the ground. This confrontation adds to the growing tension between the rival clubs and their managers.
The incident comes just months after Mourinho was accused by Galatasaray of making “racist statements” when he claimed their bench was “jumping like monkeys” following a 0-0 league draw in February. That comment earned Mourinho a four-match suspension, later reduced to two.
Mourinho has a history of touchline controversies, including a two-match ban in 2011 for poking Barcelona assistant coach Tito Vilanova in the eye while managing Real Madrid.
Galatasaray wasted no time mocking their rival after the victory, posting a photo of Mourinho with Buruk on social media with the caption “You should not attack, you should digest.” In another post featuring a cartoon version of Mourinho, they wrote “Galatasaray drives you crazy.”
The defeat leaves Fenerbahce six points behind league leaders Galatasaray in the Super Lig standings, though Mourinho’s side has a game in hand.
