New Rules Introduced for ISL 2024-25

The upcoming Indian Super League ( ISL 2024-25) season promises to be thrilling, with several new rules being implemented. As the premier division of Indian football, managed by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and its commercial partner, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), the ISL currently features 13 teams across the country.

Traditionally, the ISL only promoted clubs that won the I-League, allowing them to compete in the league, while ISL clubs themselves could qualify for Asian continental tournaments. The League Shield winners, for instance, secure direct entry into the AFC Champions League Group Stage. This season will also introduce the new ISL Nivea Shastra 2.0 ball. ISL 2024-25

Since achieving top-tier status in the 2022-23 season, six different clubs have clinched the ISL Cup: ATK (three times), Chennaiyin FC (twice), Mumbai City FC (twice), Bengaluru FC, Hyderabad FC, and Mohun Bagan (once each). The ISL League Shield has seen victories by Mumbai City FC (twice), Mohun Bagan, Jamshedpur FC, and FC Goa (once each).

As the 2024-25 season marks the 11th edition of the league, all three Kolkata giants will face off for the first time. The season kicks off on September 13, and fans are eager for an exciting competition. Here are the major new rules for this season:

Key Changes to ISL Rules:

  • Salary Cap: A new category for homegrown players has been introduced. Up to three U-23 players, who have been registered with a club for three consecutive years before the 2024-25 season, can now be exempted from the salary cap.
  • Coaching Requirements: Every team must appoint an Indian assistant coach with an AFC Pro License (or equivalent). If the head coach is suspended or dismissed, the Indian assistant coach will take over all head coaching responsibilities as an interim.
  • Concussion Substitutions: Teams can now make one concussion substitution per match. In such cases, the opposing team is also granted an extra substitution opportunity.
  • Wrongful Dismissal Claims: The AIFF has introduced a mechanism to challenge wrongful dismissals due to direct red cards, correcting any obvious errors ISL 2024-25
