Real Madrid Legend Marcelo Announces Retirement

Former Real Madrid and Brazil defender Marcelo has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36. The left-back, who enjoyed a trophy-laden career spanning nearly two decades, confirmed his decision in a video posted on social media.

“My story as a player ends here but I still have much to give to football,” Marcelo said in the video, which showcased highlights from his illustrious career.

Marcelo’s Career Highlights

Marcelo began his career at Fluminense in Brazil before joining Real Madrid in 2007. He spent 15 and a half seasons at the Bernabéu, becoming the club’s most decorated player at the time with 25 trophies. His achievements with Real Madrid include:

  • 6 La Liga titles
  • 2 Copa del Rey titles
  • 5 Spanish Super Cups
  • 4 UEFA Super Cups
  • 4 FIFA Club World Cups

After leaving Real Madrid in 2022, Marcelo returned to Fluminense, where he helped the club win the Copa Libertadores in 2023. He also had a brief spell at Olympiacos in Greece before retiring.

International Career

Marcelo represented Brazil 58 times, scoring six goals. He was part of the squad that won the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013 and also won Olympic medals in 2008 and 2012.

Tributes and Legacy

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez paid tribute to Marcelo, describing him as “one of the greatest left-backs in Real Madrid and world football history.”

“He is one of our greatest legends and Real Madrid is and always will be his home,” Pérez said.

Marcelo’s retirement marks the end of an era for Real Madrid and for Brazilian football. He will be remembered as one of the greatest left-backs of all time, and his contribution to the game will not be forgotten.
