Arsenal Impress in Preseason Win Over Leverkusen, Aston Villa Edge Bilbao
Arsenal continued their preparations for the 2024-25 Premier League campaign with an emphatic 4-1 victory over German champions Bayer Leverkusen at Emirates Stadium. The Gunners, playing their first home game since the end of last season, displayed a scintillating attacking performance that will undoubtedly boost their confidence ahead of the new campaign.
Oleksandr Zinchenko opened the scoring early on, capitalizing on a clever pass from new signing Kai Havertz. Leandro Trossard doubled Arsenal’s lead shortly after, also assisted by Havertz, who showcased his playmaking abilities. Gabriel Jesus, showing his predatory instincts, made it 3-0 before halftime after seizing upon a loose Leverkusen throw-in.
In the second half, substitute Bukayo Saka’s incisive run and cut-back created an own goal for former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka. Although Havertz reacted quickly to ensure the goal was credited to him, the play highlighted Arsenal’s ability to create chances from various angles.
Leverkusen, who enjoyed an unbeaten Bundesliga season last year, managed a late consolation goal through Adam Hlozek. However, the result underlined the gulf in class between the two sides on the night.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will be pleased with his team’s performance, particularly the seamless integration of new signings and the attacking fluidity displayed throughout the match. The Gunners will look to continue their winning momentum when they face Lyon in the Emirates Cup on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Laliga side Athletic Bilbao at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium. The match was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams showcasing their attacking intent. Jacob Ramsey’s early goal was cancelled out by Yeray Alvarez, but Jaden Philogene restored Villa’s advantage in the second half. Bilbao fought back once again, levelling through Gorka Guruzeta’s smart finish.
The decisive moment came late in the game, as Cameron Archer raced onto a long ball, rounded the goalkeeper, and calmly slotted home to secure the win for Unai Emery’s side. This victory will provide a much-needed boost for Villa, who had previously suffered three consecutive preseason defeats.
Aston Villa will conclude their pre-season preparations with a challenging fixture against Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday. This match will provide Emery with one final opportunity to assess his squad and fine-tune his tactics before the start of the Premier League season.
