Bayern edge St Pauli to Restore Six-Point Bundesliga Lead
Leroy Sané scored twice in the second half as Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich defeated a resilient St Pauli 3-2 at the Allianz Arena on Saturday, March 29th, restoring their six-point advantage at the top of the table. The victory ended Bayern’s two-game winless run in the league.
Bayern, preparing for their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Inter Milan on April 8th, took the lead in the 17th minute. Harry Kane tapped in a Michael Olise cross for his 22nd league goal of the season. The goal meant Kane has now scored against all 19 Bundesliga clubs he has faced, a record second only to Miroslav Klose.
St Pauli, who had hit the crossbar earlier, responded strongly and equalized just 10 minutes later through Elias Saad’s clever flicked finish.
The visitors continued to trouble Bayern, but Sané proved decisive after the break. He restored Bayern’s lead in the 53rd minute, drilling home another assist from Olise. Jamal Musiala then saw an effort tipped onto the crossbar before Sané struck again in the 71st minute, finishing off a quick move following a cutback from Kane.
St Pauli’s Lars Ritzka scored a consolation goal with an unstoppable shot in stoppage time, but Bayern held on for the victory.
The win moves Bayern to 65 points, six clear of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, who defeated VfL Bochum 3-1 on Friday. St Pauli remain in 15th place with 25 points. The hard-fought victory provides a timely boost for Bayern ahead of their crucial European clash.
