Brazil survive Japan scare to book Round of 16 berth

Brazil left it late but kept their FIFA World Cup campaign alive with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Japan on Sunday, overturning a first-half deficit to secure a place in the Round of 16.

For much of the contest, the five-time world champions struggled to find a way past a disciplined Japanese side that defended with remarkable organisation and threatened on the counterattack. It took a stoppage-time strike from Gabriel Martinelli to finally break Japan’s resistance and spare Brazil from a stunning early exit.

Brazil entered the knockout fixture as favourites, but it was Japan who settled into the game quicker. Their compact defensive structure denied Brazil space in the final third, while quick transitions kept Carlo Ancelotti’s men under constant pressure.

The breakthrough came in the 29th minute when Kaishu Sano punished a lapse in Brazil’s defence, finishing calmly to hand Japan a deserved lead. The goal reflected Japan’s confidence and tactical discipline, qualities that frustrated Brazil throughout the opening half.

Trailing at the interval, Brazil returned with greater urgency and intensity. Their persistence was rewarded in the 56th minute when veteran midfielder Casemiro rose to meet Gabriel Magalhães’ delivery, heading home the equaliser and shifting the momentum in Brazil’s favour.

The Seleção dominated possession after drawing level, pinning Japan deep inside their own half as they searched for a winner. Despite the pressure, Japan remained composed. Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced a series of important saves, while the back line continued to frustrate Brazil with timely interceptions and disciplined defending.

As extra time appeared inevitable, Brazil produced one decisive moment.

Deep into stoppage time, Bruno Guimarães threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the penalty area for Gabriel Martinelli, who kept his composure to slot home the winner and spark jubilant celebrations among the Brazilian players and supporters.

The victory ensures Brazil progress to the Round of 16, but the performance also highlighted areas that require improvement as the tournament enters its decisive stages. Despite enjoying the majority of possession, Brazil lacked fluency for long periods and needed experience and resilience to overcome one of the tournament’s most organised sides.

While Brazil celebrated another step towards a sixth World Cup title, Japan exited the competition with their heads held high. Their disciplined defensive display, tactical awareness and fearless approach pushed one of football’s traditional giants to the very limit, earning widespread admiration despite the result.

Brazil will now face the winner of the Norway-Ivory Coast clash in the Round of 16, knowing that sterner tests await if they are to continue their pursuit of another world title.
