Club World Cup Poses Challenge for Man City and Chelsea
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has voiced concerns about the impact of the 2025 Club World Cup on Manchester City and Chelsea. The two clubs will represent England in FIFA’s expanded 32-team tournament in the United States, set to conclude on July 13, just a month before the Premier League kicks off on August 16.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Masters highlighted the scheduling dilemma, emphasizing the players’ contractual need for three weeks of rest. “If either Manchester City or Chelsea reach the final, there’s a four-week gap before the Premier League starts. It poses great difficulty,” he said.
The Club World Cup has drawn criticism from players’ unions and national leagues, citing welfare concerns and potential disruption to domestic competitions. The issue underscores the growing tension between global tournaments and domestic football calendars.
