Erik ten Hag Sacked as Manchester United Manager
Manchester United have officially parted ways with Erik ten Hag after two and a half years, following a disappointing start to the season. The Dutchman was informed on Monday morning that his time at Old Trafford was over, with his last game being the 1-0 defeat to West Ham on Sunday. Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was recruited to work alongside Ten Hag in the off-season, has been appointed as interim manager, with the rest of the management staff remaining in place. United confirmed the decision in a statement, acknowledging Ten Hag’s contributions, including winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024, and extended their gratitude for his efforts.
Ten Hag’s tenure included a promising first season, where he led United to a third-place Premier League finish and the Carabao Cup trophy, ending the club’s six-year trophy drought. However, United’s form dipped last year, with an eighth-place finish and a Champions League group-stage exit. Key decision-makers, including Chief Executive Omar Berrada, Sporting Director Dan Ashworth, and Technical Director Jason Wilcox, recommended a managerial change following another rocky start.
During the summer, United invested significantly in new players, bringing in Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, and Noussair Mazraoui for around £205 million. Despite this, results failed to improve, prompting the decision to move on from Ten Hag. United’s search for replacements had previously explored options such as Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Roberto De Zerbi, and Thomas Frank.
