Feyenoord Sack Manager Priske Before Crucial Champions League Match
Feyenoord have sacked manager Brian Priske just two days before their Champions League play-off first leg clash against AC Milan. The Dutch club announced the decision on Monday, citing inconsistent results and a lack of progress as the reasons for Priske’s dismissal.
Priske, who replaced Arne Slot in June, had signed a three-year contract but departs after just seven months in charge. Despite some impressive results, including a 3-0 win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League, Feyenoord have struggled for consistency under his leadership.
Feyenoord currently sit fifth in the Eredivisie, 12 points behind leaders Ajax. They were also knocked out of the KNVB Cup by PSV Eindhoven last week.
The club’s statement highlighted their concerns about the team’s inconsistent performances and lack of progress.
“Although Feyenoord achieved some impressive results with Brian, especially in the Champions League, the first team’s performance has been far too inconsistent in recent months, and unfortunately, we see too little structural progress,” the statement read.
Priske’s sacking comes at a crucial time for Feyenoord, who are due to face AC Milan in the Champions League play-off round on Wednesday. The first leg will take place at De Kuip, with the second leg scheduled for the following week in Milan.
Feyenoord are expected to announce an interim manager to take charge of the team for the Champions League tie.
Priske’s tenure at Feyenoord got off to a promising start with victory in the Johan Cruyff Shield. However, a string of poor results in recent months, including a 6-1 defeat to Lille in the Champions League, has led to his dismissal.
The club’s decision to sack Priske just days before a crucial Champions League match highlights their determination to achieve success in the competition. They will be hoping that a change of manager will provide the spark needed to overcome AC Milan and progress to the knockout stages.
