Guatemala secured their place in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday, holding off a spirited Guadeloupe side to earn a 3-2 victory in their final Group C match at Shell Energy Stadium.
The win ensures Guatemala finish second in the group with six points. They will now advance to face Group B winners, Canada, in the quarter-finals.
The Central American side, known as “Los Chapines,” took an early lead when José Pinto converted a penalty in the 13th minute. Olger Escobar then doubled their advantage in the 29th minute with a well-taken lofted finish inside the box from a Rubio Rubin assist.
Guadeloupe fought back in the second half, with Ange-Freddy Plumain reducing the deficit from the penalty spot in the 50th minute. However, Rubio Rubin restored Guatemala’s two-goal cushion in the 70th minute with a close-range shot.
Matthias Phaëton scored Guadeloupe’s second goal in the 78th minute, ensuring a tense finish, but Guatemala held on for the crucial three points.
Guadeloupe concluded their 2025 Gold Cup campaign without a point, finishing bottom of the group with a 0-0-3 record.
