Defending champions Bayer Leverkusen staged a remarkable comeback from two goals down to defeat second-division side Cologne 3-2 in extra time and reach the German Cup semi-finals.

Cologne stunned the home crowd with goals either side of half-time from Damion Downs and Linton Maina. However, Leverkusen responded with a late surge, with Patrik Schick scoring twice in the closing stages to force extra time. Victor Boniface then scored the winning goal in the 98th minute to complete a thrilling comeback.

This victory highlights Leverkusen’s resilience and determination under manager Xabi Alonso. Despite facing a two-goal deficit, they refused to give up and fought back to secure a memorable win.

“It was a very tough game against a very good opponent,” Alonso said. “But we showed a good reaction. It was maybe not our best game but we played with a big heart. We fought until the last minute to reach this stage.”

Cologne will be disappointed to have let their lead slip, having produced a disciplined and organized performance for much of the match. They will now turn their attention back to their league campaign, where they are aiming for promotion to the Bundesliga.

Leverkusen, who are currently second in the Bundesliga and have already qualified for the Champions League last 16, will be hoping to defend their German Cup title. They have now won a club record 10 consecutive German Cup matches, highlighting their dominance in the competition.

Alonso’s side will face a tough test in the semi-finals, but they will be confident of securing another victory and progressing to the final.
