This victory, coupled with Arsenal’s defeat to Bournemouth, gives Liverpool a one-point advantage over Manchester City, who needed a late winner to overcome Wolves.
Curtis Jones was the star performer for Liverpool, winning the penalty that Mohamed Salah converted for the opening goal and then scoring the winner himself early in the second half.
Chelsea had equalized through Nicolas Jackson, but Jones’ decisive strike ultimately proved the difference.
Manager Arne Slot praised his team’s resilience against a strong Chelsea side, highlighting the significance of the victory. “Many other games were hard but this might have been the hardest maybe,” he admitted.
This win reinforces Liverpool’s status as genuine title contenders. Under Slot, they have rediscovered the winning formula that saw them lift the trophy in 2019-20, and are now unbeaten in 10 of their 11 games this season.
In contrast, Manchester City are displaying uncharacteristic vulnerability. Their reliance on late goals to secure victories against Wolves and Arsenal highlights a shift from their usual dominance. Pep Guardiola acknowledged this, stating, “We are not used to winning games at the end. It is a good flavor for us.”
While City extended their club-record unbeaten league streak to 31 games, their recent performances suggest a more competitive title race this season.
With Arsenal also dropping points, Liverpool are seizing the opportunity to establish themselves as frontrunners. The Premier League is set for an exciting battle for the championship.
