Jonathan Burkardt and Nadiem Amiri scored second-half goals as Mainz 05 came from behind to defeat RB Leipzig 2-1 at the Red Bull Arena, significantly impacting the race for Champions League qualification. Xavi Simons had given Leipzig an early lead, but Mainz’s second-half resurgence earned them a crucial three points.

The match, a pivotal clash between two teams level on points entering the game (numbers not provided in the original, but would be added here if known), saw Leipzig, seeking to rebound from a series of draws, take the lead after just 60 seconds. Xavi capitalized on a rebound after Amadou Haidara’s shot was blocked, smashing the ball home. The frantic opening period saw chances for both sides, with Benjamin Šeško close for Leipzig and Jae-sung Lee threatening for Mainz.

Mainz, however, grew into the game, with Amiri and Lee increasingly influential in midfield and Burkardt a constant threat up front. Despite this, clear chances were limited, and Leipzig maintained their 1-0 lead at halftime.

The second half witnessed a dramatic shift. Mainz emerged with renewed intensity, pressing Leipzig high and forcing mistakes. Their pressure paid off in the 52nd minute when Amiri equalized, reacting fastest to a loose ball in the box and firing past Péter Gulácsi.

Just six minutes later, Burkardt completed the turnaround. He expertly controlled a pass from Amiri, turned, and slotted the ball past Gulácsi, silencing the home crowd. Leipzig manager Marco Rose responded by introducing Kevin Kampl and Nicolas Seiwald for Haidara and Lutsharel Geertruida, but Mainz’s defense remained resolute.

In the closing stages, Leipzig pushed for an equalizer. Šeško headed narrowly wide, and Yussuf Poulsen fired over the bar. Mainz, however, remained dangerous on the counter-attack, with both Burkardt and Amiri striking the woodwork in quick succession. Mainz manager Bo Henriksen introduced Lennard Maloney for Amiri to solidify the midfield in the final minutes.

The victory, only Mainz’s second-ever Bundesliga win in Leipzig, moves them into fourth place (assuming this is accurate based on the unstated points total), ahead of Leipzig on goal difference (again, assuming this is correct based on prior context, otherwise adjust accordingly), and strengthens their Champions League aspirations. The match highlighted Mainz’s resilience and tactical flexibility, as well as Leipzig’s vulnerability under pressure.
