Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) celebrated their Indian Super League (ISL) League Winners Shield triumph with a 2-0 victory over FC Goa at a packed Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday. The win, witnessed by approximately 62,000 fans, capped off a record-breaking season for the Mariners.

MBSG had already secured the title with a win against Odisha FC in their 22nd match, but the victory over Goa solidified their dominance in the 11th season of the ISL. They finished the league stage with a record-high 56 points from 24 matches. FC Goa remained in second place with 48 points.

The victory also saw MBSG set several other ISL records: most wins in a season (17), most home wins (11, while remaining unbeaten), and most clean sheets (15).

The opening goal came in the 62nd minute, the result of a defensive mix-up for FC Goa. Boris Singh inadvertently headed an attempted back-pass into his own net, with goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari out of position. Greg Stewart doubled MBSG’s lead in second-half injury time, finishing off a counter-attack.

FC Goa had started the match brightly, creating several scoring opportunities in the first half. Iker Guarrotxena, unmarked and set up by Borja Herrera, missed a clear chance in the 16th minute. Winger Udanta Singh also threatened, breaking into the box but seeing his effort blocked by MBSG defender Tom Aldred.

MBSG had a goal disallowed in first-half added time. Manvir Singh found the net, but the referee ruled out the goal for a handball by Dimitri Petratos in the build-up, after protests by Goa players.

The second half saw MBSG take control, particularly after the opening goal. The match concluded fittingly.
