Newcastle secure Carabao Cup quarter-final spot
Newcastle United advanced to the Carabao Cup quarter-final with a convincing 2-0 victory over Chelsea at St James’ Park, avenging their Premier League defeat from just three days earlier.
Alexander Isak broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute, capitalizing on Sandro Tonali’s interception outside the penalty area. The lead was doubled three minutes later when Joe Willock’s flick-on of Isak’s cross was turned into his own net by Chelsea defender Axel Disasi.
The match began with high intensity, as Joelinton struck the post for Newcastle before Chelsea’s Renato Veiga saw his deflected effort go wide. Chelsea struggled against Newcastle’s pressing game and were fortunate to reach halftime only two goals behind.
Sean Longstaff had a header ruled out for offside in the second half, while Chelsea’s best chance fell to Joao Felix, who missed when clean through on Nick Pope. Despite the introduction of Noni Madueke, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca opted not to bring on Cole Palmer, while Nicolas Jackson remained unused on the bench.
Newcastle nearly added a third late on when substitute William Osula’s low drive struck the post. The home crowd showed their appreciation for a dominant display, despite their team’s relatively modest Premier League form this season.
The victory keeps Newcastle’s hopes alive of securing their first major domestic trophy since their 1955 FA Cup triumph. They will host Brentford in the Carabao Cup quarter-final during the week of December 16.
