River Plate have completed the signing of Colombian international midfielder Kevin Castaño from Russian club Krasnodar, following protracted negotiations. The transfer fee, while officially undisclosed, is reported to be approximately $13 million, making it potentially the second-most expensive signing in the club’s history, rivaling the fee paid for Lucas Pratto.

Journalist Juan Balbi, who closely follows River Plate, reported, “Today marks a significant moment as Kevin Castaño arrives in Argentina… Details around the transfer fee for Castaño have been tightly guarded. Cruz Azul, his previous club, stood firm over the weekend, wanting to retain the remaining 30% of his rights. The total expenditure for River is reportedly a staggering $13 million for the complete transfer… Some sources argue it could end up costing more than the $12 million River paid for Pratto, plus additional bonuses.” The final amount is subject to ratification by the club’s board.

Balbi noted that River Plate have been actively seeking to strengthen their midfield following the departure of Enzo Pérez. “River has made significant investments recently, spending $10 million on Driussi, the same amount on Villagra, nearly $11 million on Barco, and $8.5 million on Borja. While the club has seen significant player sales, their spending has also been substantial…”

Cruz Azul, Castaño’s former club, insisted on selling their remaining 30% stake in the player, leading to the high overall cost for River Plate.

Castaño is expected to undergo a medical examination, sign a four-year contract, and be available for selection for Saturday’s match against Deportivo Riestra. Balbi emphasized Castaño’s match readiness: “He comes in match-ready and won’t require an extensive adaptation period, making him a candidate to play against Deportivo Riestra.”

Balbi described Castaño’s playing style: “Castaño is a regular starter for the Colombian National Team, a midfielder with three career goals, and is known for his ability to complement another midfielder alongside him. He is expected to work well with Enzo Pérez, providing an additional playmaking dynamic that River currently lacks in their squad.” The signing represents a significant investment by River Plate as they seek to bolster their midfield options.
