Villarreal has issued a strong condemnation following a violent attack on two disabled supporters outside their stadium after Saturday’s La Liga match against Valencia. The incident occurred as fans were leaving the Estadio de la Cerámica following the 1-1 draw between the two sides.
Two Villarreal supporters with disabilities were assaulted by a group of five hooded individuals. One of the victims, who plays for Villarreal’s EDI team for players with intellectual disabilities, suffered contusions and required overnight observation in hospital. The other supporter sustained a serious facial fracture and was admitted to Castellon General Hospital.
Villarreal released a statement condemning the attack and expressing their support for the victims.
“Villarreal CF would like to reiterate the club’s absolute condemnation and utmost repudiation of any act of violence in any form, which has no place in football and society,” the statement read. “The club is also cooperating with the National Police and will use all means at its disposal to identify the aggressors.”
Valencia also issued a statement condemning the violence and emphasizing the importance of respect and coexistence among fans.
“Football does not tolerate violence in any form,” Valencia said. “Stadiums should be a place free of hatred and the club condemns these acts that do not represent the fundamental values of sport or the healthy coexistence and respect between fans that was evident throughout the match.”
Police are currently investigating the incident and are working to identify the perpetrators. The attack has sparked outrage and concern among fans and officials, with many calling for greater measures to ensure the safety of disabled supporters at football matches.
