Werder Bremen Condemn 10-Man Stuttgart to Record Home Defeat
Oliver Burke scored twice, including a 90th-minute winner, as Werder Bremen defeated 10-man VfB Stuttgart 2-1 away in the Bundesliga on Sunday, April 13th. The result condemns Stuttgart to a club-record fifth consecutive home league loss and further damages their hopes of European qualification.
Leonidas Stergiou gave the hosts, who finished second in the Bundesliga last season, a positive start, scoring in the 19th minute after being set up by Angelo Stiller.
However, Werder Bremen equalized in the 32nd minute when Oliver Burke scored, assisted by Mitchell Weiser.
The match’s key turning point arrived in the 65th minute when Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade received a debatable second yellow card, reducing the home side to 10 men.
Werder Bremen pressed their numerical advantage in the closing stages, and Burke snatched all three points in the 90th minute, converting a pass from Leonardo Bittencourt.
The defeat marks the first time in Stuttgart’s history they have lost five consecutive Bundesliga matches at home. Sebastian Hoeneß’s side, who have now lost as many league games as they have won this season (11), drop to 11th place (40 points) and are five points adrift of the European qualification spots with only five rounds remaining. Werder Bremen climb above Stuttgart into ninth place with 42 points.
