Zimbabwe draw dent Nigeria’s World Cup Qualifying Hopes
Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes suffered a blow on Tuesday as a last-minute equalizer saw them held to a 1-1 draw by Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. The result leaves the Super Eagles fourth in Group C, further adrift of leaders South Africa.
Victor Osimhen, making his 40th appearance for Nigeria, appeared to have secured the victory when he scored in the 73rd minute, converting an Olaoluwa Aina cross after it evaded the Zimbabwean defense. Nigeria, buoyed by their recent win over Rwanda, had dominated large periods of the match, creating numerous chances, particularly down the left flank through the lively Moses Simon. However, Zimbabwean goalkeeper Washington Arubi produced several saves to keep his team in the contest.
Zimbabwe almost equalized shortly after Osimhen’s goal when Khama Billiat struck the crossbar. They eventually found the leveller in the 90th minute, as substitute Tawanda Chireda exploited space in the Nigerian defence and finished cleverly past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali from close range.
The draw means Nigeria remain fourth in Group C with 7 points. Leaders South Africa extended their advantage to 13 points after defeating Benin Republic 2-0 in Abidjan. Benin and Rwanda are tied on 8 points, one ahead of Nigeria.
With only four qualifying rounds remaining (to be played in September and October), the Super Eagles face an uphill task to secure automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The late concession against Zimbabwe represents a significant setback in their campaign.
