Arsenal have broken the world transfer record for a women’s footballer by completing the signing of Canada international forward Olivia Smith from Liverpool for a fee of £1 million.

The 20-year-old, considered one of the brightest young talents in the game, has signed a four-year contract with the reigning Women’s Champions League holders.

The £1m fee surpasses the previous record set in January when Chelsea signed USA defender Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave for £900,000. The landmark figure comes 46 years after Trevor Francis became the first £1m player in the men’s game.

“It’s a privilege and an honour to sign for Arsenal,” Smith said in a statement. “It’s my dream to compete for the biggest titles here in England and in Europe and I’m excited to get started and contribute to doing that here with Arsenal.”

Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers described Smith as an “exciting young player” who can make a “big contribution.”

The move marks a rapid ascent for Smith, who only turned professional in 2023. After a prolific youth career in Canada, where she made her senior international debut at just 15, she joined Portuguese side Sporting before moving to Liverpool a year ago for a club-record fee of just over £200,000.

In her debut season in the Women’s Super League (WSL), Smith was a standout performer for Liverpool, finishing as their top scorer with seven goals in 20 league games as the team finished seventh.

For Liverpool, who are currently without a manager, the sale represents a significant profit of nearly £800,000. It is understood that managing director Andy O’Boyle rejected several bids before the record-breaking £1m offer was accepted. The deal also reportedly includes a sell-on clause, ensuring Liverpool will benefit financially from any future transfer.

Arsenal’s recruitment of Smith is a major statement of intent as they look to build on their European success. Known for her pace, directness, and goal-scoring ability, she adds another potent weapon to their attack.
