Atalanta beat Bologna to revive Champions League hopes
Serie A top scorer Mateo Retegui scored one goal and assisted another as Atalanta defeated Bologna 2-0 on Sunday, April 13th, ending a three-match losing streak and consolidating their third-place position in the race for Champions League qualification. The defeat halts Bologna’s seven-game unbeaten run and damages their own top-four aspirations.
Atalanta, who had failed to score in their previous three games, started brightly at the Gewiss Stadium. Retegui, making his return from injury, opened the scoring in just the third minute, tapping in Raoul Bellanova’s perfect cross from close range for his 23rd goal of the season.
Retegui turned provider in the 21st minute. After shaking off Bologna defender Jhon Lucumí, he delivered a cross into the box for Mario Pašalić to convert and double the hosts’ lead.
Bologna fought to get back into the match before halftime. Dan Ndoye came closest in the 35th minute, his curling shot from outside the box brilliantly tipped onto the post by Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi. Ndoye missed another chance shortly after.
Atalanta suffered an injury blow just before the break when defender Sead Kolašinac was stretchered off with an apparent knee injury after a challenge involving Riccardo Orsolini.
Bologna applied pressure around the hour mark, but Carnesecchi made saves to deny Benjamin Dominguez, Juan Miranda, and Ndoye again. Atalanta defended comfortably in the latter stages to see out the victory.
The win lifts Atalanta to 61 points, strengthening their hold on third place, two points ahead of fourth-placed Juventus. Bologna remain fifth with 57 points. Atalanta travel to face AC Milan next Sunday, while Bologna host league leaders Inter Milan.
