Atletico Madrid confirm two positive coronavirus tests ahead of Champions League quarter-final
Spanish club Atlético Madrid have confirmed that two members of their group have tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The identities of the two people have not been disclosed at the moment.
Diego Simeone’s side are due to play RB Leipzig in the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Thursday in Lisbon.
Ahead of the club’s trip to Portugal for the game, the whole squad and members of staff involved in the tie were tested for Covid-19.
An official statement on the club’s website reads: “Among the results known today, two positives have appeared, which are isolated in their respective homes.
“The results were immediately communicated to the Spanish and Portuguese health authorities, UEFA, the Royal Spanish Football Federation, the Portuguese Federation and the Higher Sports Council.”
More tests will now be carried out on the Atlético squad and travelling members of staff, as well as any close contracts with the two players tested positive. Spain is one of hardest hit countries in Europe after the coronavirus spread to the continent with most football activities.
