Benzema’s Late Winner Sends Al-Ittihad Top of Saudi Pro League
Karim Benzema’s last-gasp goal secured a dramatic 2-1 victory for Al-Ittihad against Al-Taawoun, sending them three points clear at the top of the Saudi Pro League. The French striker’s 95th-minute strike ensured Al-Ittihad capitalized on Al-Hilal’s inactivity to take control of the title race.
Al-Ittihad took the lead in the 21st minute through Abdulrahman Al-Oboud, who reacted quickest to convert a rebound. However, Al-Taawoun equalized deep into first-half stoppage time when Musa Barrow’s volley deflected in off Danilo Pereira.
The second half saw Al-Ittihad dominate possession and create several chances, but they were frustrated by a combination of VAR and the woodwork. However, Benzema’s late intervention secured all three points for the visitors.
Benzema’s winning goal was a moment of individual brilliance. He latched onto a pass from Houssem Aouar and fired a left-footed shot into the back of the net, sparking wild celebrations among the Al-Ittihad players and fans.
This victory sends Al-Ittihad three points clear of Al-Hilal, although the Riyadh giants have a game in hand.7 Al-Hilal will have the opportunity to reclaim top spot if they can beat Damac on Saturday.
Benzema’s goal was his 14th of the season, moving him just one behind Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the Golden Boot. The Frenchman has been in superb form this season and continues to be a key player for Al-Ittihad.
Al-Taawoun will be disappointed to have conceded such a late goal, having battled hard to secure a point. They will now need to regroup and focus on their upcoming matches as they look to climb the table.
