Cristiano Ronaldo is set to make football history once again after being named in Portugal national football team’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking his sixth appearance at the prestigious tournament.

At 41 years old, Ronaldo continues to defy expectations as Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez unveiled a strong 27-man squad ahead of the competition set to take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The veteran forward, who currently plays for Al Nassr, remains the centerpiece of Portugal’s national team and will once again carry the hopes of millions of supporters as the country chases World Cup glory.

Speaking during the squad announcement at Cidade do Futebol in Lisbon, Martinez described the upcoming tournament as one of major emotional significance for the squad. The coach also paid tribute to late Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident last year.

Martinez revealed that the squad would symbolically include “27 players plus one,” honouring Jota’s memory and lasting impact on Portuguese football.

“He is our strength, our joy,” Martinez said during the emotional announcement. “Losing Diogo was one of the most difficult moments for this team, but his spirit continues to inspire us every day. We will carry his dream with us into this World Cup.”

Portugal head into the tournament as reigning UEFA Nations League champions and one of Europe’s strongest contenders. The squad features an experienced core blended with emerging talent across every area of the pitch.

In defence, players such as Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, and Nuno Mendes are expected to provide stability and leadership. Midfield creativity will once again come from stars including Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Vitinha.

Portugal’s attacking options also remain dangerous, with Rafael Leao, Pedro Neto, Joao Felix, and Goncalo Ramos joining Ronaldo in a powerful frontline.

Martinez defended some of his selection decisions after leaving out notable names including Mateus Fernandes, Ricardo Horta, and Pedro Goncalves. The Portuguese coach emphasized the importance of squad depth, tactical flexibility, and physical preparation due to the demands of the World Cup schedule, climate conditions, and travel requirements.

“The complexity of this tournament is very high,” Martinez explained. “We need players who can adapt to different systems and multiple positions. Balance and versatility are extremely important.”

One of the more unusual selections was the inclusion of fourth-choice goalkeeper Ricardo Velho, who will travel with the team as a reserve training option. Under FIFA regulations, he can only officially join the main squad if another goalkeeper suffers an injury during the competition.

Portugal will begin their World Cup campaign against the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Houston before facing Uzbekistan and Colombia during the group stage.

As anticipation builds ahead of the tournament, Ronaldo’s presence adds another historic chapter to an already legendary international career. Having already become the all-time leading scorer in international football, the Portuguese icon now prepares for what could be the final World Cup appearance of his remarkable journey.

Fans around the world will be watching closely as Ronaldo attempts to guide Portugal toward the one major trophy that has remained elusive throughout his extraordinary career — the FIFA World Cup title.
