Late Goals Spare Tunisia ‘s Blushes against 10-Man Malawi
Tunisia secured a 2-1 victory over 10-man Malawi in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Tunis on Monday, with two late goals rescuing the Carthage Eagles from a potentially embarrassing draw. Substitute Seifeddine Jaziri’s 87th-minute header and a stoppage-time penalty from Elias Achouri ultimately sealed the win.
Malawi, despite being reduced to 10 men in the second half, provided stiff resistance. They had the best chance of the first half just before halftime, when Lloyd Njaliwa incredibly missed from two yards out, heading the ball against the crossbar and then off his own face after Richard Mbulu headed a cross to goal.
Malawi goalkeeper William Thole produced an excellent performance, making several key saves to keep his team in the contest. However, a second yellow card for midfielder Lloyd Aaron in the 64th minute shifted the momentum decisively in Tunisia’s favor.
After sustained pressure, Zamalek striker Jaziri broke the deadlock in the 87th minute, heading home at the far post after a Malawian defender flicked on Achouri’s cross. Achouri then converted a late penalty to confirm the victory.
Malawi were awarded a penalty of their own in the final moments, but Mbulu’s spot-kick was well saved by Tunisia goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen.
The win extends Tunisia’s lead in Group H to four points over second-placed Namibia. Malawi remain in fifth place with six points. The match highlighted Tunisia’s late resilience, but also exposed some vulnerabilities against a determined, albeit ultimately outmatched, opponent.
