Leaders Bayern held 1-1 after late Union Berlin goal
A late goal from Benedict Hollerbach, capitalizing on a goalkeeping error, earned Union Berlin a 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei on Saturday. Despite the dropped points, Bayern extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to nine points.
Bayern, chasing a record-extending 34th league title, moved to 62 points. Second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, on 53 points, have a game in hand and travel to VfB Stuttgart on Sunday.
Vincent Kompany’s Bayern dominated possession from the outset, setting up camp in Union Berlin’s half. However, the hosts defended resolutely, limiting Bayern to mostly long-range attempts. Serge Gnabry had Bayern’s best chance of a goalless first half in stoppage time, but his shot from a tight angle, after being played through by Michael Olise, was saved by goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow.
Bayern continued to press in the second half. Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane both missed opportunities from promising positions. Substitute Leroy Sane finally broke the deadlock in the 75th minute, firing home after a cutback from Olise.
However, Bayern’s lead lasted only eight minutes. Union Berlin, who had largely been content to defend, made a double substitution and capitalized on a moment of uncertainty from Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig. Urbig, deputizing for the injured Manuel Neuer and Daniel Peretz, could only weakly punch away Josip Juranovic’s cross, and former Bayern academy player Hollerbach headed in the equalizer.
The draw marks a second consecutive league match without a win for Bayern, following their shock 3-2 home loss to VfL Bochum last week.
For Union Berlin, who are now winless in their 12 Bundesliga meetings with Bayern, the draw moves them up one place to 13th. Union played without their head coach, Steffen Baumgart on the touchline, who was serving a touchline ban.
