Barcelona took a commanding step towards the Champions League semi-finals with a dominant 4-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in their quarter-final first leg at the Olympic Stadium on Wednesday night, April 9th. Raphinha scored and provided two assists, equalling Lionel Messi’s club record for goal involvements in a single Champions League campaign, while Robert Lewandowski netted twice.

The La Liga leaders overwhelmed their German opponents from the start, forcing several early saves from Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel through Lamine Yamal and Lewandowski. The breakthrough came in the 25th minute. After a Fermín López free-kick led to a scramble, Pau Cubarsí poked the ball goalwards, and Raphinha applied the finishing touch on the line, appearing to just beat the offside trap.

Dortmund offered limited resistance before halftime, with Karim Adeyemi and Serhou Guirassy having half-chances.

Barcelona extended their lead just three minutes after the restart. Yamal’s cross was headed across goal by Raphinha, and Lewandowski tapped in from close range. The hosts continued to create chances, with López hitting the post and blazing the rebound over.

Lewandowski grabbed his second and Barcelona’s third in the 66th minute, finishing clinically under Kobel at the end of a swift counter-attack for his 99th goal for the club.

Raphinha then capped his influential performance by assisting Barcelona’s fourth goal in the 77th minute. He broke clear and squared the ball for Yamal to finish. The assist took Raphinha to 19 goal involvements (goals + assists) in the Champions League this season, matching the club record set by Lionel Messi in 2011-12.

Dortmund struggled throughout, with key striker Guirassy repeatedly caught offside or thwarted by blocks, including a late double block by substitute Ronald Araújo. The visitors had a late goal from Maximilian Beier disallowed for offside.

The comprehensive victory puts Hansi Flick’s side, unbeaten in 22 games across all competitions in 2025, in a very strong position ahead of the second leg in Dortmund on Tuesday, April 15th.
