Spain rescue Draw Against 10-Man Netherlands in Nations League thriller
Mikel Merino scored a stoppage-time equalizer as Spain salvaged a 2-2 draw against a 10-man Netherlands in the first leg of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final in Rotterdam. The late goal keeps Spain’s hopes of defending their Nations League title alive, extending their unbeaten run in all competitions to 17 matches.
Spain, the reigning European champions, took the lead in the first half. Nico Williams capitalized on a mistake by Dutch full-back Jorrel Hato, finishing smartly.
The Netherlands responded well, equalizing before the hour mark. Cody Gakpo powered a low shot home after being set up by Bournemouth attacker Justin Kluivert.
The visitors then took the lead just 39 seconds into the second half. Tijjani Reijnders scored with a low shot, seemingly putting the Netherlands in control.
However, the match turned again when Hato was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Mikel Oyarzabal with nine minutes remaining. Spain capitalized on their numerical advantage, with Merino scoring the crucial equalizer in stoppage time. He converted from close range after Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen parried Williams’ low shot into his path.
The match also saw Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen, who was born in Amsterdam, make his senior debut for La Roja, coming on as a substitute in the first half after an injury to Barcelona’s Pau Cubarsi.
The second leg will take place in Valencia on Sunday. The winners of the tie will face either Croatia or France in the semi-finals. The dramatic draw leaves the tie finely balanced, with both teams still harboring hopes of progressing to the final four. The red card proved a turning point, shifting the momentum in Spain’s favor and ultimately allowing them to salvage a draw.
