Spain’s Sports Council Allows Barcelona’s Olmo and Victor to Play Until Season End

Spain’s National Sports Council (CSD) has upheld an appeal filed by Barcelona players Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, permitting them to continue playing for the club until the end of the season.

The decision comes after LaLiga reduced Barcelona’s wage cap on Wednesday, claiming the club’s revised accounts did not match the end-of-year figures from their previous auditor. These earlier accounts had included proceeds from the sale of VIP seats in the renovated Camp Nou, which had allowed Barcelona to comply with LaLiga’s Financial Fair Play rules and extend the registration of both players.

While LaLiga insisted Barcelona lacked the financial capacity to register the two players based on their accounts, the CSD annulled the agreement between the Spanish top flight and the country’s football federation (RFEF).

In its ruling, the CSD stated that the players’ registrations remain valid as the RFEF acknowledged “there is no federation resolution that agreed to the cancellation of the licences” and their decision not to grant a licence is “null and void.”

The CSD added: “In any case, the professional careers of Dani Olmo and Pau Victor have been protected since January 8 by the urgent precautionary measure granted by the CSD, with the sole aim of avoiding irreparable harm until this procedure is resolved.”

The council further explained that the agreement between LaLiga and the RFEF must be considered invalid due to “reasons of incompetence, for not having followed the appropriate procedures established in the regulations, and for not being the body authorised to make decisions.”

This latest development continues a ongoing saga that began in January, when the CSD first allowed Barcelona to provisionally register the pair, just four days after Spanish football authorities had rejected their requests.
