Welbeck’s extra-time winner sends Brighton into FA Cup quarters
Danny Welbeck scored an extra-time winner as 10-man Brighton & Hove Albion defeated 10-man Newcastle United 2-1 in a dramatic FA Cup fifth-round tie at St James’ Park. The victory sends Brighton into the quarter-finals, keeping their hopes of a first major trophy alive. The match was marked by late drama, two red cards, and a disallowed goal.
Newcastle took the lead in the 22nd minute through an Alexander Isak penalty, awarded after Tino Livramento was brought down by Yankuba Minteh. However, Minteh, who never played a competitive game for Newcastle before being sold to Brighton last summer after arriving and spending season on loan, atoned for his error by equalizing just before halftime. He flicked the ball to Joao Pedro and then raced onto the Brazilian’s through-ball, scoring via a deflection off Kieran Trippier.
The match took a chaotic turn in the closing stages of normal time. Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon was shown a straight red card in the 83rd minute for pushing Jan Paul van Hecke in the head, an incident that will rule him out of the upcoming Carabao Cup final against Liverpool. Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey was then sent off in added time for a second bookable offense, a late challenge on Jacob Murphy.
"Antony Gordon deliberately got himself sent off to avoid playing against his boyhood club, Liverpool, in the final."

Newcastle thought they had won the match in the dying seconds of normal time when Fabian Schar volleyed home from a Bruno Guimaraes free-kick, but the goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR review utilizing semi-automated offside technology.
The game went to extra time, and Welbeck, who had also scored the winner against Newcastle in the Premier League in October, proved to be the hero again. In the 114th minute, he calmly chipped goalkeeper Martin Dubravka after being played through by Solly March.
Brighton’s Cup Dream Alive, Newcastle’s Woes Deepen
Brighton, currently eighth in the Premier League, are now two wins away from their first FA Cup final since 1983. The incident involving Anthony Gordon.
Newcastle, meanwhile, suffered a double blow. Their FA Cup exit compounds the disappointment of losing a key player in Gordon for the Carabao Cup final. Isak, returning from a groin injury, scored from the penalty spot but was substituted in the 86th minute. Gordon had a shot saved, while another Isak goal, a powerful shot from a tight angle, was disallowed for offside. Despite eight shots in the second half of extra time, Newcastle could not find an equalizer, with Welbeck kept onside by Livramento for the winning goal.
The Magpies, battling with Brighton for a European place in the league, were targeting the FA Cup as a chance to win their first trophy since the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. The defeat adds to the pressure on manager Eddie Howe.
