Lyon thrash Bayern to Reach Champions League Semi-Finals
Record eight-time winners Olympique Lyonnais secured their place in the Women’s Champions League semi-finals with a commanding 4-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the second leg on Wednesday, March 26th, completing a 6-1 aggregate win. A dominant second-half performance dismantled the German side after a competitive first half.
Lyon, holding a 2-0 advantage from the first leg in Munich, faced early pressure from Bayern, who made five changes from the first leg. The visitors looked to ignite the tie and were rewarded when Klara Buhl put them ahead 12 minutes before halftime. Buhl finished low off the post after a neat one-two with Momoko Tanikawa, scoring only the second goal Lyon had conceded in the competition this season.
Lyon midfielder Lindsey Heaps acknowledged her team’s shortcomings at the break, telling broadcasters, “Honestly it’s just not good enough from us… We just need to be better and focussed.”
Lyon responded emphatically immediately after the interval. Just 30 seconds into the second half, Melchie Dumornay headed home a Kadidiatou Diani cross to restore Lyon’s two-goal aggregate lead.
A defensive error from Bayern’s Giulia Gwinn in the 54th minute allowed Diani to pounce and make it 2-1 on the night. Six minutes later, Tabitha Chawinga effectively sealed the tie, finishing from close range after another Diani assist.
Bayern goalkeeper Maria Luisa Grohs prevented further damage with saves from Damaris Egurrola and Selma Bacha, but Ada Hegerberg added Lyon’s fourth goal in added time.
Lyon will now face Arsenal in the semi-finals, after the English side completed a comeback victory over Real Madrid earlier on Wednesday. The performance reaffirmed Lyon’s status as favourites to lift the trophy once again.
