World Cup Day 8: Mexico Qualify, Canada Make History, Switzerland Impress

Day 8 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup produced the tournament’s first confirmed qualifier, a record-breaking scoreline, and a moment of genuine heartbreak — all across Groups A and B.

Mexico became the first nation to reach the Round of 32, while Canada claimed their maiden World Cup victory in emphatic fashion. Switzerland also made a decisive statement with a dramatic late win, and Czechia and South Africa played out a share of the spoils in Atlanta.

1. Czechia and South Africa Share the Spoils

Day 8 opened in Atlanta, where both Czechia and South Africa were desperate to bounce back from their opening defeats. Another loss for either side would have left their knockout hopes in serious jeopardy.

Czechia made a bright start. Michal Sadilek opened the scoring in the sixth minute, latching onto a clever first-time pass from Alexandr Sojka to finish low past Ronwen Williams. The Czechs controlled large portions of the contest and created several chances to extend their lead, but could not find a second goal.

Teboho Mokoena scores South Africa’s first World Cup goal in 16 years to rescue a point against Czechia in the 83rd minute

South Africa grew into the match and were handed a lifeline late on. Teboho Mokoena converted a penalty in the 83rd minute after Maseko’s shot struck the arm of Sulc, rescuing a point that keeps both sides alive heading into the final matchday. Both Czechia and South Africa sit on one point each, with the battle for second place in Group A still very much open.

2. Switzerland Find Their Rhythm Against Bosnia and Herzegovina

Switzerland were made to work hard in their Group B contest against Bosnia and Herzegovina, but ultimately ran out 4-1 winners in a dramatic finale at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

The game was goalless and tightly contested before substitute Johan Manzambi changed everything. The Swiss forward scored a sumptuous volley in the 74th minute to break the deadlock moments after coming on, and the floodgates opened from there.

Bosnia were then reduced to ten men after Tarik Muharemovic was sent off, and Manzambi added his second before fellow substitute Ruben Vargas also got on the scoresheet. Granit Xhaka added a fourth from the penalty spot deep in injury time, while Amar Memic grabbed a late consolation for the ten-man Bosnians.

The result puts Switzerland on the cusp of the knockout stages ahead of their final group match against Canada.

3. Canada Make a Statement Against Qatar

Canada delivered the performance of Day 8, thrashing Qatar 6-0 at BC Place in Vancouver to claim their first-ever victory at a men’s World Cup — and the biggest win in CONCACAF World Cup history.

Jesse Marsch’s side were relentless from the first whistle. Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute and Jonathan David quickly added a second with a volley that flew past Mahmoud Abunada.

Qatar were reduced to ten men just after the half-hour when VAR upgraded a challenge on Tajon Buchanan to a red card, and Canada made their numerical advantage count immediately.

David added his second just before half-time, and substitute Nathan Saliba bent in a free-kick in the 64th minute to make it four. An own goal from Al Manai and a hat-trick finish from David completed a historic rout.

However, the afternoon was not without its share of shadow. Ismael Kone was stretchered off in the second half with what appeared to be a broken leg after a challenge from Assim Madibo, who was immediately shown a red card. The midfielder’s injury threatened to overshadow a landmark evening for Canadian football.

4. Mexico Become the First Team to Qualify

Mexico secured their place in the Round of 32 with a narrow but controlled 1-0 victory over South Korea at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara. The co-hosts have now won both their opening group matches and top Group A with six points.

It was a cagey contest that required a moment of fortune to settle. Luis Romo pounced in the 50th minute after South Korea goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu collided with defender Lee Gi-hyuk and dropped the ball inside the area, allowing Romo to find the empty net.

South Korea pushed for an equaliser late on but Edson Álvarez’s composure in midfield helped Mexico manage the game effectively. Son Heung-min struggled to make his usual impact against a compact Mexican backline. South Korea finished with the better expected goals figure, but were unable to convert their chances and now face a must-win final group match against South Africa.

Group Standings

Group A: Mexico lead with six points and have qualified. South Korea are second on three points, while Czechia and South Africa have one point each. The race for second place goes to the final matchday.

Group B: Canada and Switzerland are level on four points and are well placed to advance. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar have one point each and face a difficult path to progress. The Canada-Switzerland match on matchday three will determine who tops the group.

Day 8 provided the clearest indication yet of which teams are building real momentum. Mexico continue to impress with their defensive discipline, Canada have announced themselves on the world stage in stunning fashion, and Switzerland showed they have the squad depth to grind out results when it matters. The race for the knockout rounds in both groups is now entering its decisive phase.
