Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a meniscus tear in his left knee. The Bundesliga club announced the significant injury blow on Monday, April 7th.

Schlotterbeck’s absence comes at a critical juncture for Dortmund as they continue their push for European qualification and prepare for a challenging Champions League quarter-final. The 25-year-old Germany international has been a mainstay in Dortmund’s defence this season.

“Nico’s loss hits us very hard,” said Dortmund Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl. “He is a very important part of our team and has impressed with consistently good performances this season. We hope that he will be fit again quickly and will receive maximum support from us on his way back.”

The injury severely impacts Dortmund’s aspirations in the final weeks of the season. They currently sit eighth in the Bundesliga standings with six matches remaining, five points adrift of fourth-placed Mainz 05 and the automatic Champions League qualification spots.

Furthermore, Nico Schlotterbeck will miss Dortmund’s upcoming Champions League quarter-final tie against La Liga leaders Barcelona, with the first leg scheduled for Wednesday, April 9th. Dortmund were runners-up in the competition last season.
